Fig tree thrives

We are very proud of our fig tree for surviving a very harsh winter with no trouble. We didn’t even have to wrap it. Matt picked the perfect variety for this spot, very hardy. It is late to open its leaves but first to start producing fruit this year!

What a spectacular show our cherry blossoms put on this year! They are doing fine in our New York City sidewalk. The tulips Ivy planted with students also grew well and were much enjoyed by the neighbors.

Garden Rules in the News

Our gardeners attended a press conference yesterday where the City announced it would adopt the new rules for our community gardens and today they are in the news.

May Meeting Report

Thanks for the great turn out at our May meeting. It threatened to rain but ended up being a beautiful day.

Our team of gardeners and supporters

Everyone came ready to help and we made good progress on our spring cleaning.

At the meeting we discussed watering (thank you Royland!), creating a rain water collection barrel, composting (thank you Sally, Yoko and Eren!). garbage collection (try to carry away as much of your own trash as possible, larger collections can go out to the curb on collection days). Michelle, John, Eren, Geddes and Marilyn  moved the gazebo in between the trees in the community space.  TRUCE discussed their ideas to collaborate with the garden through TRUCE Roots (8-10 students) and a mural on the garden wall.

Thanks again to everyone who attended the meeting and showed their support!

Three new cherry blossoms on Saint Nicholas Ave

We are so proud of our three new street trees! These double-bloomed pink Kwanzan cherry blossoms are spectacular. Congratulations to Michelle who led the project. Special thanks to Geddes for getting them in the ground. We thank Nobu for donating the beautiful trees. Thanks to Ian for coordinating with Parks and Manhattan Forester Frick for his support.

Help us take care of them! They love water and we want them litter-free. Remember – your dogs can burn them, so this is not their turf – lead them to the curb. With everone’s help, we can make them the whole neighborhood’s to enjoy for many years to come.
