What do the New Parks Garden Rules Mean for You?

with Edie Stone, GreenThumb

This past fall, the Parks Department established a new set of Community Garden Rules designed to help preserve and protect New York City’s community gardens. These new rules were issued in advance of an expiring agreement between the New York State Attorney General’s office and the City of New York. GreenThumb Director Edie Stone will explain how these new rules apply to GreenThumb gardens, with special emphasis on the role of the garden contact people.

Other gardens are also invited to attend.

Snow Duty

Thanks to Dee’s hard work our sidewalks are staying clear despite relentless snow this month!

We are the first to know salt can damage plants, but these storms call for a serious response.

Safety first! Salt distribution

Newsletter Notes

With this issue of Stone Soup News; there is an announcement that it was the last scheduled issue.
A changed format is being explored for a bi-weekly web page in a format that may be more interactive.

Many hands make light work: and the more elaborate an edifice: the more laborers and craftsmen are required. Stone Soup News, certainly served our garden well; in its initial years: displaying our dreams, struggles, and triumphs for a community-managed green space: in vibrant color. Marilyn Moseley, utilized her graphic skills( on genius drive) to make each issue a greater visual treat. And she and I debated out each issue’s editorial  slant: like Michelangelo and the Pope, clashing over the Sistine Chapel. However, the magazine’s format was expensive to produce and distribute: without outside support and inside help.

We often couldn’t get the news and picture  contributions out timely enough. And we also came to realize; that there is a need to promote; not just one garden group; but all gardeners and gardening activity in our Harlem neighborhood. So, we will be testing the feasibility of both, a shorter, more frequent journal for the
Carrie McCracken TRUCE and a new collaborative journal; with other gardens and gardeners.

This is the plan for going forward.( open for discussion, for sure). Evolution.

I want to express my gratitude to Marilyn for her work on the newsletter. And I hope this experience heartens her to continue to channel the spirit of past women journalistic crusaders; like Ida Tarbell, Gertrude Mossell, and Ida B. Well-Barnett.I hope many more of her readers, will commend her efforts for the Stone Soup News.

Just when you thought the hard work was done for the season…

Snow! New York City woke up with a fresh blanket of snow Wednesday morning. Slippery streets and sidewalks made the morning commute a challenge for many. We are proud that our sidewalk path was wide and clear. Steve and Dee were on the scene very quickly and saved the day!

Yes, even in the winter, gardeners have serious responsibilities to keep our garden welcoming and safe! We should add shovels and hand warmers to our wish list!

2010 garden notes

Happy 2011

Welcome to the 2011 season of our garden! We appreciate your support.

What will you grow in 2011?

Next month the garden will be registered with Green Thumb for a four year license: real progress towards the permanence of community gardening. Carrrie McCracken TRUCE Garden was also transferred off the HPD sales block to the Parks Department. It is now our challenge to demonstrate that neighborhood greening can be well done through citizen management.

Participation is open to all neighbors and we strive to accommodate all life schedules. Step up when and where you can. We call it making Stone Soup: varying contributions by many participants to make a productive feast for all .

Be sure to share! We want to hear your ideas!

Welcome to your garden.
